Question

assumptions

& beliefs

All my work focuses on the assumptions we use to understand our world and guide our decisions.  Often these assumptions and beliefs were formed subconsciously by adopting the culture and behaviors of those around us, especially when we were very young.

It is impossible to transform ourselves unless we become aware of these mental models and learn how to change them.  And this is what I help you to do through stories, questions, and speaking.

Invite me to speak about my books, my new project – Act like an Icon – or how to discover and change your beliefs. I love to use the Socratic method, but I also create stories and speeches tailored to your needs.

I'm Sorry I Broke Your Company

I cover a lot of ground in this book, but some of the topics I can cover are:

  • How process reengineering efforts often fail because they are based on faulty assumptions about the nature of work processes
  • How metrics foster bad behavior
  • How to create a strategy that doesn’t rely on predicting the future

Who Moved My Holy Hand Grenade?

Who knew that Monty Python offered so many business lessons? If you want a fun ride, I use clips from the movie to illustrate:

  • Cognitive biases, using the “If she weighs the the same as a duck, she must be a witch” scene
  • Planning fallacy and systems thinking, using the killer bunny and Trojan rabbit
  • The dangers of corporate culture and the current focus on earnings estimates, using coconuts and the dead cart
  • And other lessons from the book, all of which can be customized for your needs

Act like an Icon

Let me show you how acting like an icon is a brain-friendly way to communicate, innovate, and learn. We can do deeper dives into:

  • Making difficult conversations easy using personas
  • Analyzing team styles and compensating for missing attributes with famous personalities
  • Soft skill building using role models, especially for empathy and coaching
  • Personal development role plays chosen to meet your current challenge

Measuremental

My latest work is about the dangers of relying too heavily on metrics. Many organizations don’t understand the difference between performance indicators and performance drivers, and this gap can lead to harmful, unintended consequences.  I’ll also review how you can pressure-test your metrics to make sure that you won’t be driving the wrong behaviors.
